1. Dialogue “The Telephone conversation”
Read the dialogue. Learn it by heart and present it to the group.
(Part 1)
A male voice: Hello.
Helen: Hello. Can I speak to MRS. Brown, please.
A male voice: Mrs. Brown? I’m afraid you have the wrong number.
Helen: Isn’t it 755608?
A voice: No, It’s 755609.
Helen: Oh, I’m very sorry.
A voice: That’s all right.
(Part 2)
A female voice: Hello
Helen: I’d like to speak to Mary brown, please.
A female voice: One moment, please. Hold the line.
…in a few minutes
Mary: Hello.
Helen: Hello, this is Helen.
Mary: Oh, hello, darling. How are you?
Helen: Fine, thanks. Would you like us to go to the theatre with me tonight?
Mary: Oh, no, Helen. I’m very tired.
Helen: Are you? But it’s Sunday today, and Sunday is your day off, isn’t it?
Mary: Yes, it is. But on Sunday I cook, wash up, do the rooms, iron the linen, sew, knit, type letters, help my children with their lessons and…
Helen: How awful. And what’s about your husband? Doesn’t he help you?
Mary: He’s too busy on Sunday.
Helen: What does he do?
Mary: Well, he does his morning exercises, after breakfast he has a short rest and reads his morning papers. He has lunch at 1 o’clock and then goes to see his parents and has 5 o’clock tea with them. In the evening he usually surf the Internet, or watches TV, or plays table games with our children. Oh, yes, and he takes the dog for a walk.
Helen: And your children? What do they do? Are they busy on Sunday, too?
Mary: Well, Violet plays the piano and goes to the swimming-pool. Charles goes to the movies, plays football in summer or hockey in winter with his friends… and in the evening they go dancing.
Helen: Oh, what a busy family!
