Labor unions in such skilled trades as bricklaying and printing offer apprenticeship programs for their members. Apprenticeships combine on-the-job experience with individual or classroom instruction. Many businesses and industries also conduct training programs for their employees.
Men and women in the armed forces may be trained in a variety of technical jobs. Many of these people later find a market for their skills in civilian life.
The job Corps program of the federal government provides work training for disadvantaged youths. Another source of professional education is a revenue-sharing program established by the Job Training Partnership Act of 1982. Under this law, state and local governments receive federal funds to furnish job training for unskilled, disadvantaged youths and for needy adults.
