Possessive case (притяжательный падеж)

Апостроф 's обычно ставится, если:

- первое существительное словосочетания означает человека или животное: the teacher’s book (а не `the book of the teacher’), the dog’s tail, mother’s looking-glass, the boy’s name, Alice’s hair,

- за ним не следует существительное

Например:

It isn’t Sam’s flat. It is Ann’s (квартира Анны),

- если речь идет о неодушевлённых предметах, то употребляется of:

the door of the house(а не `the house’s door`), the end of the film

Иногда можно использовать обе структуры:: the owner of the café или the cafe’s owner

the book’s title или the title of the book

- если первое существительное обозначает организацию или группу людей: the government’s decision или the decision of the government, the firm’s success или the success of the firm

- если речь идет о названиях каких-либо мест: the city’s new museum, the world’s population, France’s system of government, India’s capital

После существительного во множественном числе, которое оканчивается на -s апостроф помещается после - s: my sister’s dolls (одна сестра), my sisters’ dolls (больше, чем одна сестра), Mr. Miller’s car the Millers’ car (Mr. и Mrs. Miller)

Для существительного множественного числа, которое не оканчивается на s, используется ’s: men/women/children/people: the children’s mother/the women’s room

's употребляется после комбинации из нескольких существительных: John and Jane’s house/Mr and Mrs Miller’s car илис временными словами, выражениями (tomorrow/next, month/Monday и т.д.) и промежутками времени:

Например:

I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s party.

Have you read today’s newspaper?

I hope I’ll have a week’s holiday.(-‘s с сущ.единств.числа)

I hope I’ll have three weeks’ holiday.(-s’ с сущ.множ.числа)

A friend of mine, my own house.

On my own / by myself

A friend of mine / yours / his / hers / theirs. (а не `a friend of me/ you / him’ и т.д..):

A friend of mine/A friend of Mary’s

We went to the country with some friends of ours. (а не `some friends of us’)

Ted quarreled with a sister of his.

It was a good suggestion of yours to celebrate my birthday in the forest.

That lady over there is a friend of my mother’s.

It was a good idea of Sam’s to go fishing.
