OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE

Read and translate the text. Say which facts given in the text were known to you.

Oxford and Cambridge are not only among the oldest cities in Great Britain, but are also home to the oldest and most prominent universities both in the United Kingdom and the world. The first written record of Oxford appeared in “The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle” in 912 and by the 11th century it was a well-fortified city.

Cambridge developed more slowly, but when William the Conqueror built a castle there in 1068, it marked an important step in the town’s development. Today, the remains of medieval buildings, city walls, and castles, only add to the special atmosphere in both cities.
