MY NATIVE TOWN

Kostroma is my native town because here I was born. Kostroma is a Russian ancient town situated on the both sides of the great Volga river. It’s a Volga town and its symbol is a light sailing boat breasting the waves.

Kostroma is the main town of the Kostroma region. It was founded in 1152 by the Prince Yuri Dolgoruki. Due to its favourable location in the XVth–XVIth centuries Kostroma became a major crafts and trade centre. By the middle of the XVIIth century Kostroma became a main trade and cultural centre of the Moscow State. Its town’s builders, icon-painters and craftsmen were well-known throughout the land.

In the early XVIIth century the people of the Kostroma area offered resistance to the Polish invaders. According to the legend in the winter 1613 Ivan Susanin a peasant from the village Domnino near Kostroma led the Poles away from the road deep into the woods. He was murdered by the enemies but they couldn’t find the road to Moscow. Ivan Susanin became a hero and pride of Kostroma. In 1967 the monument to Susanin was erected in our town.

Nowdays Kostroma has a population of 300,000 people. People of many nationalities live and work here.

At present Kostroma is a developed industrial town with plants, factories which produce different kinds of machines, furniture, clothes, food and other goods. From time immemorial Kostroma is a centre of the flax-textile industry.

As there are many children in our town, there are many educational facilities. There are many schools, technical schools and vocational schools where students are given secondary education and are taught different trades. Kostroma has 3 Universities – the Kostroma State University, the Technological University and the Agricultural Academy – which provide higher education to school leavers.

Kostroma is also a cultural centre with many libraries. There are two theatres in our town: the Puppet theatre and the Drama theatre of Ostrovsky.

Kostroma is a beautiful town full of sights that’s why it is included in “Golden Ring of Russia”. Every year many tourists come to our town to admire the ancient Russian town.

Kostroma is a very green town with parks, squares, small green corners full of flowers and trees. Our town is said to be one of the best Russian towns. It’s no doubt so!
