Passive and active electronic components
Different types of electronic devices consist of passive and active elements. Such passive elements as capacitors, coils, resistors, and transformers are used for distribution of energy in circuits. Their functions are to consume and dissipate power. The gain power in such circuits is less than one

Active elements are used in the circuits which amplify power. They operate using electric, thermal, optical, and acoustic phenomena in a solid body, liquid, vacuum, gas, and plasma. Active elements are used to control electric parameters and characteristics. It is impossible to take apart, assemble or repair such elements. They carry out functions of rectification, amplification, oscillation, frequency converting, and other active processes.
