Opening sentence

Hi Dan

Thanks for your email.

I'm so glad that you want to come to Ireland. It's a very beautiful country with a lot of things to see. I come from Cork, in the south of Ireland. But now I live in Dublin, in the east. It's the capital city. It's got lots of shops and pubs, and it's got some interesting museums. There are lots of lovely buildings in the city. There are mountains in the west of Ireland. There aren't any big cities but there are lots of beaches. We often go there for our holidays.

I hope you can come this year!

Best wishes,

greeting
о

Sylvia

Postcards

Postcards are usually informal. We often send postcards when we are on holiday, or to thank people for invitations, parties, etc. We don't include our address in postcards.

We begin postcards with Dear +

Name, (the greeting)

In the closing sentence we usually

Mention a wish or a future plan

(e.g. See you soon).

We often write Love, + name at

The end.

Formal letters

We write formal letters to people we don't know personally. We include the date. We usually include our address and the name and address of the recipient (the person we are writing to).

When we know the name of the recipient the greeting is Dear + title + surname (e.g. Dear Mr Brown, Mrs Jackson, Ms López, DrMahmud, etc.) and the ending is Yours sincerely, + name.

When we don't know the name of the recipient the greeting is Dear Sir or Madam and the ending is Yours faithfully, + name. We put our full name (or title + surname) at the end [e.g. Jane Smith or Ms J Smith) We can put a reference at the start of the letter (e.g. Holiday Booking RJ1361). We usually describe the purpose of the letter in the opening sentence.

The closing sentence usually mentions a future plan or wish (e.g. I look forward to your reply).
