MY FAMILY

Before I start talking about my family, let me introduce myself. I am Sveta Petrenko. I am 17. I have left school this year. I was born in Kyiv, so I have been living in Kyiv since my childhood.

And now I am going to tell you about my family. We are a family of five. We think we are a large and friendly family. So we are happy to be living together and are getting on all right.

To begin with, I am going to talk first about my dad. His name is Sergey Petrovich, he is 45. He works as a surgeon in a hospital. He is neither old, nor young. He is a good-looking man, hand­some, rather thin with dark brown hair just beginning to go grey. He is a very sociable person. What I don't like about my father is that he is always busy. Very often he works overtime. He is a bread-maker in our family. He is fond of going to the country on weekends, because he enjoys working in the garden.

My mother's name is Galina Nickolayevna. She is three years younger than my father. She works as a teacher at a nursery school. My mother is rather slim and pretty; she is always elegant and smart. In short, she is a pleasant-looking woman of about 40. She always has a lot of work to do at school and about the house. She is fond of her work and spends a lot of time there. But she has to cook the food for all the family at home. Shopping and cooking is nearly half a day's work for her. But my granny and I have a habit of helping her about the house. Boris is my elder brother. He is six years my senior. So he is 23 already. He has graduated from the University and works as an economist now. He is married. His wife is a journalist. They are three in a family. They have got a child, my nephew. It is a lovely little boy of two with golden hair and dark blue eyes. He is full of joy and gaiety. My brother's family live separately.

And finally a few words about my grandmother. My granny is my best friend, I must tell you. She is always ready to listen to my endless stories about my school life and my friends.

She is retired on pension now, but in her youth and her old­er age she worked as a teacher in school. She is a very understanding person, I must admit.

Put it into a few words, we are a united and friendly family.

MY FRIEND

Frankly speaking, I have a lot of friends. They are my former school­mates and boys and girls from my neighbourhood. But my bosom friend is Olga. She is a pleasant-looking girl of about 17. Olga is not very tall, but she has a strong attractive body, she is pleasantly plump. Olga is always very elegant; her clothes are the latest fashion. Her features are very delicate, and her charm is irresistible. She has white curly hair and dark-blue eyes. Her eye-lashes are so long and thick and her eyes seem dark for this reason. Her face is oval and she has a turned-up nose. To cut the long story short — Olga is a pretty girl. But in my opinion, inner beauty is more important than physical one. Olga is a well-bred, jolly and kind person. She is very tactful, shy and sensitive, emotionally stable and witty, generous and kind-heart­ed.

She did well at school and was always ready to help her friends to cope with difficult home assignments.

She is fond of reading books. Olga thinks that one book isn't enough to read, she generally has two or three books going at once. Olga has a lot of books at home and she buys them wherever she goes. She says that the books are of great help any time and they always must be at hand.

Besides, my best friend is fond of music, especially classic one. She likes to listen to music and relax. Olga goes in for sports and she is a member of our school volley-ball team. Our coach says she is a very gifted sportsman.

Olga always manages to be amusing and cheerful, energetic and enthusiastic.

She is in a habit of helping her parents, because they always have a lot of work to do both at work and about the house. She is a sunny soul by nature and always takes the slightest excuse to be amused. My best friend has an imagination and her own style. She usually writes nice compositions, because she is an educated person.

Olga is an easy-going girl, and when sometimes it comes to quarrelling, she tries to make it up at once. As I have already told you, she is a helpful person and always tries to do her best to help somebody when he has some problems. In a word — she has a noble look and bright spirit.
