London is the capital and the largest city of the United Kingdom with the population of 11 million people. The majority of Londoners live in the suburbs and travel into the centre to work.

London is home for all government departments, Parliament, the major legal institutions and the monarch. It contains the headquarters of the national television networks and of all national newspapers.

London consists of three main parts: the City, the West End and the East End. The City is the country’s business and financial centre. There is the Bank of England, the Stock Exchange, the residence of the City’s Lord Mayor, offices of firms. Only 8,000 people live there while nearly a million works.

The West End is the name of Central London that includes Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, shopping areas of Oxford, Regent and Bond Streets, the entertainment centers of Soho. There are many government buildings, including 10 Downing Street (the residence of the PM) and the Houses of Parliament (the highest legislative body). There is also Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s residence.

The East End is the poorest residential area of Central London where working class people live. There are markets, warehouses, and factories producing clothes and the Port of London.

London is a modern city with skyscrapers and the best metro in the world. Old buildings are downtown. The oldest are the Tower (11th century), St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. The latter is the place where nearly all kings and queens have been crowned; it is also a burial place with the graves of outstanding writers and poets (Dickens, Spencer etc.)

London is famous for its parks, museums, art galleries, theatres and libraries such as Hyde Park, the British Museum, the National Gallery, the British Library, and the Old Vic Theatre.

No doubt, London is a city worth seeing and thousands of tourists come there daily.
