· Aggressive policy against Protestants: people were executed in the worst traditions of the inquisition

· Tried to restore Catholicism

 

Elizabeth I

· Restored father's moderate Protestantism

· Spoke many languages. Was well educated

· Encouraged and promoted trade and commercial development

· Encouraged piracy (Francis Drake) каперство

· Defeated Spain and its incredible Invincible Armada after Spain had attempted an invasion (1588)

· Passed "Poor law" (бедняцкий закон) establishing workhouses and putting an end of beggars

· Established Jamestown, first town in the New World (1587).

· Promoted education and art. Shakespeare's plays were written at that time.

 

Mary queen of Scots, Stuart

Was a great-granddaughter of Henry VII. She was supported by catholic population in Scotland.

Could have more claim to the throne than Elizabeth. Was executed by Elizabeth I for high treason (гос измена).

 

· William Shakespeare post and playwright = Christopher Marlowe (could be one person) - poet and translator.

· Edmund Spencer, English poet

· Francis Bacon founder of English materialism and applicator of pragmatic science.
