PREFACE

(Предисловие)

Предлагаемое пособие предназначено для студентов 1 курса заочного отделения факультета международного права и юридической психологии специализации ‘международное право’.

Целями пособия являются формирование у студентов навыков и развитие умений самостоятельного чтения оригинальной литературы и ведения беседы на английском языке в пределах проработанной тематики, а также осуществление контроля знаний лексико-грамматического материала, предусмотренного действующей программой вуза.

Структурно пособие состоит из двух частей и краткого грамматического справочника. представленного в таблицах (GRAMMAR REFERENCE).

Первая часть (CONVERSATIONAL TOPICS) включает восемь разделов (UNITS), в основе которых лежат базовые тематические тексты с системой взаимосвязанных заданий и упражнений по данному разделу, активизирующих различные виды речевой деятельности. Каждый текст имеет познавательный интерес и может служить иллюстрацией к теме и материалом для беседы и закрепления тематической лексики. Тематическое содержание первой части соответствует требованиям базовой программы для неязыковых вузов.

Методические рекомендации по выполнению и оформлению

Контрольных работ

Для выполнения контрольной работы необходимо самостоятельно изучить лексико-грамматический материал соответствующего семестра. Последующая аудиторная работа с лексико-грамматическим материалом направлена на совершенствование у студентов навыков ведения беседы а английском языке и использования грамматических явлений в пределах проработанной тематики.

При выполнении контрольных работ следует соблюдать следующие требования:

1. Письменные контрольные работы выполняются в отдельной тетради или в виде распечатки с компьютерного носителя. На обложке тетради (или на титульном листе распечатки) указывается фамилия, имя и отчество студента, название факультета, номер группы, адрес, номер и вариант контрольной работы, а также фамилия преподавателя.

2. Все задания контрольной работы выполняются письменно и в указанной последовательности.

3. При выполнении контрольной работы следует списывать условие выполняемого задания и оставлять поля.

4. Контрольная работа должна быть зарегистрирована в деканате в указанные сроки (не позднее двух недель до начала сессии), после чего она передается на кафедру иностранных языков для проверки.

Если контрольная работа выполнена без соблюдения указанных требований или не выполнена полностью, она возвращается студенту без проверки.

Основной целью пособия является дальнейшее расширение и углубление знаний английского языка, а не полное освещение затрагиваемых вопросов. Поэтому, хотя пособие и содержит определенную информацию по названным темам, она носит лишь вспомогательный характер, как материал для введения и закрепления соответствующей лексики, формирования высказываний и ведения беседы по определенным темам.

Содержание второй части составляют контрольные работы (TESTS), предназначенные для осуществления контроля уровня усвоения лексико-грамма-тического материала студентами-заочниками. Каждая контрольная работа представлена в двух вариантах и содержит определенное количество заданий, направленных на закрепление и проверку понимания пройденного лексико-грамматического материала.

Hi, I’m Tom Bailey

Hi, I’m Tom Bailey, or Thomas Millhouse Bailey, to be exact. Thomas is my first name, or Christian name. Millhouse is my middle name and Bailey is my family name. This is what my birth certificate says. But never mind it, nobody calls me this way, just Tom or Tommy for short. You may very well forget my middle name, too. God alone knows where it came from, even my folks wouldn’t give me a straight answer. It just sounded O.K. to them, I guess. Well, so be it, here I’m: Thomas Millhouse Bailey, whether you like it or not.

I am a freshman at the Law Faculty of a University and have just turned 18. I do hope it’s a turn for the better because I’m eager to do something meaningful in the adult world. I’ll tell you about the University later on and now let’s stick to the topic about myself.

Are you curious about my looks? Well, nothing special. Just an ordinary guy of medium height, about five feet four inches, quite muscular and well-shaped, blue-eyed and fair-haired with long delicate fingers. That’s me in person – a born musician-turned-lawyer. My girlfriend says I’m rather handsome, but I doubt you would notice me in the crowd.

The only special thing about me is, probably, that I’m a bit on the talkative side. Not really a chatter-box. I would say I’m not a bad conversationalist and a story-teller. People enjoy my company, especially those who are a bit shy or awkward. They are fishing for words each time they gonna shoot something wise, and they never make it. It’s mostly me who does all the talking, but I take care not to stick my neck out too far. I let others have their say in all matters we discuss. Otherwise they might say I’m looking down on people, which is not at all true. I just enjoy being the driving force behind each talk. Talking is indeed my cup of tea.

I never feel ill at ease with strangers, let alone with my peers. They call me easy-going and free-wheeling.

Speaking about myself first doesn’t mean I am selfish. I just want you to understand at once what kind of person I am, what my likes and dislikes are.
