Задание 3.1

Прочитайте и переведите текст 3.

Archimedes was born at Syracuse in the year 287 B.C. (Before Christ). We know him to Alexandria shortly after Euclid’s death and on the completion of his course to have returned to his native cite, where he spend the rest of his life. Here, his remarkable ingenuity and conspicuous ability earned the high respect of the King of Syracuse.

Many stories are told of the assistance he rendered to his city: we know him to have destroyed enemy ships by focusing the sun’s rays upon them by means of lenses; on another occasion, he was able to launch a ship by some mechanism, when the builders were unable to do so.

Another well-known story is that of a goldsmith, who had made a gold crown for the king. The king suspected the gold to have been alloyed with some baser metal, and he wanted Archimedes to test it. The reader certainly remembers that the method to be employed came into his mind while he was having his bath and that people saw him run through the streets of Syracuse shouting, “Eureka! Eureka!” (“I have found it! I have found it!”).

An English scientist says “this day, if we knew which it was, must be celebrated as the birthday of mathematical physics”.
