A. Marks & Spencer

Dear Sir: I have many items purchased at Marks & Spencer by my peripatetic businessman father, including some beautiful clothes and a fold-up umbrella. Ah, the umbrella! It has never broken, inverted, failed to open or been mislaid without being recognised as mine and returned to me. Having had it for about four years, I call that unusual life span a testimony to British ingenuity.

If Mrs. Thatcher ever decides to hand over the government to Marks & Spencer, I may emigrate and change my nationality. Or maybe we could import some M&S managers to run our government!

Barbara Pilvin, Philadelphia

B. Dear Sir: I have recently been on a two-week holiday with your company to the island of Thassos.

I am sorry to say that it was the worst holiday I’ve ever had. Over the years I have been on many holidays to Greece, a country I have now come to know very well. I think I can safely say that, until this year, all of those holidays were wonderful. For example, I once spent six weeks on Crete, which I had not visited before. I loved that holiday so much that I have returned every spring for the last four years.

This year, however, was different. I honestly consider this to have been the worst holiday of my life. This is not the fault of Thassos: the fault lies entirely with your company whose inability to organize the simplest thing is quite unbelievable.

As both the outward and return flights were delayed for several hours, there was nobody to meet us at the airport or transfer us to our hotel, and when we eventually did reach the hotel, we discovered it had been built over a mile from the beach. Reading your brochure carefully, we feel this was not what we expected.
