I. Найдите слова, которые требуют сужения значения при переводе на русский язык. Переведите предложения.

1) When we, human beings, can stop using language or when we can use it to cope purely and only with the present moment, we find that the quality of our living is changed. 2) Please a customer with one article and he will come back when he needs another. 3) At seven o'clock a dull meal was served in the oakpanelled dining-room. 4) Then her blouse and stuff were on the seat. II. Определите, по какой причине отмеченные единицы данного текста нуждаются в сужении значения при переводе на английский язык. Найдите им соответствия и переведите текст.

Современные сказочники, эти творцы и носители русской сказки, чрезвычайно разнообразны по своему репертуару, по характеру творчества, мировоззрению и по манере рассказывания. Одни из них идеализируют патриархальную старину, другие резко критикуют старые устои. Одни любят эпические повествования о богатырских подвигах или волшебные сказки о борьбе чудесного героя с темными силами сказочного царства, другие предпочитают ловкого солдата и сатирические рассказы о жадном барине или сластолюбивом попе, которых беспощадно высмеивают. Одни сказочники спокойно и бесстрастно ведут свое мерное повествование, другие рассказывают сказку «на разные голоса», разыгрывают ее. Одни твердо держатся традиции сказочного канона и стремятся передать сказку точно так, как они слышали ее; другие дают свободу своему дару импровизации и каждый раз как бы заново творят сказку, создавая все новые и новые ее варианты.

III. Проанализируйте выделенные в тексте слова и объясните, какие причины определяют необходимость сужения их значения при переводе на русский язык. Найдите им соответствия и переведите текст.

Dostoevsky was a deeply religious man and politically a strong conservative Slavophile. For a short time, he became editor of the archconservative magazine The Citizen and later a regular contributor. He waged war against the liberals and the revolutionaries, who repaid him by calling his work “corruption” and “lunacy”. For Dostoevsky, Western society was too materialistic and commercial; instead he felt the values of the simple Russian people – meekness, compassion and acceptance of the will of God – were what society should emulate,

During their parallel careers, as Tolstoy was writing about the world of the country gentry, a class and a way of life which were gradually disappearing, Dostoevsky was creating the anti-heroes who haunted the dark streets of misty St. Petersburg. Yet, although they were very different – Tolstoy the champion of nature and man, the brilliant recorder of reality in its most precise detail, and Dostoevsky the relentless explorer of the dark recesses of men's souls – they were joined in their belief that in the Russian people lay the virtues that could illuminate the world.
