The Past Continuous Tense

Прошедшее длительное время

Образование:

Вспомогательный глагол to be в личной форме прошедшего времени и причастие I смыслового глагола.

was (I, he, she, it)

+ Ving

were (you, we, they)

Наш механик ремонтировал Our engineer was repairing the engine.

двигатель.

Отрицательные предложения образуются путем добавления к вспомогательному глаголу was или were отрицательной частицы not.

He was not (wasn’t) watching a film.

Вопросительные предложения образуются путем постановки вспомогательного глагола was или were перед подлежащим.

What were you discharging yesterday?

Употребление:

Прошедшее длительное время употребляется для выражения длительного действия, происходившего в какой-то момент в прошлом.

Вчера с 3 до 5 мы грузили рис. We were loading rice from 3 till 5 yesterday.

Когда мы пришли, гости When we came the guests were dancing.

танцевали.

С Past Continuous часто употребляются слова:

в тот момент – at that moment

вчера весь вечер – the whole evening yesterday

вчера с 3 до 5 – from 3 till 5 yesterday

вчера в 6 часов – at 6 o’clock yesterday
