The Identity Rule and Its Application

The subject of the infinitive is dropped, if it is identical with that of the

finite verb - otherwise it is introduced by "for".

E.g. He is glad. He has moved into a new flat. - - He is glad to have

moved into a new flat.

But

He is glad. Ann has moved into a new flat. - - He is glad for Ann to

have moved into a new flat.

The subject of the infinitive is dropped as well, if expressed by an indefinite or a negative pronoun:

It is too late. Nobody can do anything now. - -

It is too late (for anybody) to do anything now. - -

It is too late to do anything now.
