Seminar 11. Stylistic Classification of the English Vocabulary

Main layers (strata) of the English word-stock: the literary (formal) layer (stratum), the neutral layer, and the colloquial (informal) layer. The subgroups of the literary layer: common literary words; terms and learned words; poetic words; archaic words; barbarisms and foreign words; literary coinages and nonce-words. The subgroups of the colloquial layer: common colloquial words; slang; jargonisms; professionalisms; dialectal words; vulgar words; colloquial coinages. The Standard English vocabulary: the common literary, neutral and common colloquial words. Special literary (bookish) vocabulary and special (non-standard) colloquial vocabulary. Neologisms. Neologisms proper, semantic neologisms and transnominations.
