Bruno I hope you like it, Anna. We come here quite often with visitors.

It's very typical. Are you hungry?

Anna Well, I got up early this morning and I only had a tiny sandwich on the plane.

Bruno So?

Anna I'm absolutely starving.

Bruno I'm afraid they don't have menus in English here, but just say if you need help with anything.

Anna OK. How many courses are we having, Carlo?

Carlo A starter and a main course then we can decide later about dessert.

Anna That's fine with me. Where are the starters?

Carlo They're here, then these are fish dishes, and the meat ones are on the next page.

Anna What do you recommend?

Bruno Everything is good.

Anna What's this?

Bruno That's mushrooms in a cream sauce.

Carlo I'm having that. Followed by the tuna. It comes with asparagus and small potatoes roasted in the oven.

Anna That sounds great. I'll have the same. With a salad instead of the potatoes. What about you Bruno?

Bruno I'll have the soup followed by the pasta. I don't eat much meat these days.

Anna Is that for health reasons?

Bruno Yes, my wife thinks I should lose a little weight. She's probably right. What would you like to drink?

Anna White wine? And maybe some water?

Carlo Just the water for me, Bruno. I'm driving. I thought I could show you the old town and the cathedral later.

Anna That would be lovely.

Bruno Well, I'm not driving, so I'll share a bottle of white with Anna. You can choose the water, Carlo.

Carlo OK, Sparkling in that case. Right. Let's see if we can catch the waiter's attention.

Anna Oh, it was very tasty and perfectly cooked. How was your pasta?

Bruno Very nice indeed. The sauce was wonderful. And just the right amount.

Carlo Would anybody like dessert?

Bruno Let's wait a bit, shall we?

Anna Good idea. So do you come here often?

Carlo Usually when I have guests. It's a bit rich forevery day.

Anna What about you, Bruno?

Bruno I used to eat here a lot when I worked in this part of town but as I said my wife is trying to get me to eat better these days.

Anna So are you married as well, Carlo? You mentioned your mother-in-law earlier.

Carlo Yes, I just got married last year actually. We had a great honeymoon in Croatia.

Anna Really? We went to Croatia last summer for our holiday. It's gorgeous isn't it?

Carlo It certainly is. We played tennis nearly every day. It was great. Do you do any sports, Anna?

Anna Just jogging. Can I run anywhere here?

Bruno Yes, there is a lovely run from your hotel through the woods down to the old town and back. I'll show you later.

Anno Thanks.

Carlo You were saying you went to Croatia last year. Where else have you been?

Anna Greece, Turkey, France. Talking of France, I've still got room for dessert. Let's look at the menu shall we?

Bruno Sorry?

Anna You know, I'm tired, ready for bed.

Bruno Me too. It's been a long day.

Carlo Does anyone want a coffee?

Anna No thanks.

Bruno Me neither.

Carlo I'll get one with the bill. Let me try and catch the waiter. Excuse me? Can I have a black coffee and the bill, please?.....

Anna Let me get this.

Carlo No, it's OK I'll get it. You're our guest.

Anna Seriously, it's on me. You have paid for everything all day. I'm going to put it on expenses anyway.

Bruno Well, that's very kind.

Carlo Yes, very generous.

Anna You're very welcome. Now, the waiter was great. How much can I tip him?

Carlo Just round up the total and add 10%. Tell him to keep the change.

Anna But I'm paying by card.

Bruno In here? Unlikely.

Anna But I don't have any cash on me!

Bruno Maybe we should pay after all. They only take cash...

Task 7.

a) Read the text below.

b) What ways of entertaining were mentioned there? Can you add some more?

How to entertain your business client

Entertaining clients – you either love it or you hate it. But whichever side of the fence you are on, you will agree that it is a vital part of relationship building.

The most effective way to build relationships with business associates or customers is through face-to-face meetings. Rather than opting for a formal gathering when entertaining clients why not try a well organized, luxury event in a relaxed atmosphere. Entertaining a group of clients can prove tricky as not everyone will be interested in the same things.

The best course of action in this situation is to opt for a programme of events. That way you are sure to find elements that will appeal to all. For example an evening at the theatre followed by dinner.

However you decide to entertain your clients, you must ensure that they receive five-star treatment.

What you do and how you do it, in terms of client entertainment, cannot just have an effect on your sales figures, it can affect your reputation as a company. What you choose to offer as client entertainment reflects on your company, so you cannot just do the cheapest possible option and expect to be regarded as a high roller.

It is a good idea to keep notes about your clients likes and dislikes. If you have a client that is a passionate Chelsea supporter, it would be better to invite them to a game.

Remember, also, that you will usually attend such events with your clients in order to maximise the networking potential, so put together suitable employee/colleague/client partnerships for the events.
