The Smart Way to Get on

Doing well in an interview may be an important part of getting a place at university, a job, or a pass in an important exam. However, many young people fail to create the right impression because their appearance lets them clown. New Streetwise looks at how to dress and behave on the big day.

Don't play with your hair, or chew your nails or fingers. It can be very off-putting and only highlights your nervousness.

Don't wear clothes that are scruffy and untidy.

Don't take your personal stereo - switched on or off!

Don't take a plastic bag - even for important documents like your CV or exam certificates - it always looks like you're carrying your dirty washing.

Don't wear dirty shoes!

Do enter the interview room with a bright and friendly smite, it counts for a lot.

Do dress smartly. Whether your clothes are old or new, have them washed and pressed.

Do wear a shirt and tie if the interview demands it.

I graduated from Tver state university in 1985. Now I am finishing post-graduate studies to defend my candidate thesis this winter. My major is called the theory of literature, which includes the study of the history of Russian and foreign literature.

I am interested in working in the Russian department of your university as a teacher of Russian and Russian literature for the school year 1991-1992. In high school I gained experiences teaching Russian to foreign students. In your department I could assist in the teaching of grammar, conduct a class in Russian conversation or give lectures on Russian literature.
