VOCABULARY EXTENSION

tight: fitting closely, especially to closely, so as to be uncomfortable

e.g. I never wear tight clothes, I just don’t feel comfortable in them.

She wore a cream-coloured gabardine skirt tight enough to bring out the curve of her hips.

The collar was a little too tight.

skintight / figure-hugging: skintight or figure-hugging clothes are made very tight and fit exactly to the shape of your body.

e.g. Marilyn was wearing a figure-hugging black dress that looked very sexy.

He wore high-top sneakers, skintight faded jeans, and a ripped tee-shirt.

tight-fitting: tight-fitting clothes are deliberately made to be tight when they are worn.

e.g. Gerry was wearing a tight-fitting black shirt which looked very elegant.

She kept pulling her tight-fitting skirt over her knees, but it always crept back up.

close-fitting: not fitting very tightly, but showing the shape of your body.

e.g. Standing next to him was a small thin woman in a close-fitting black velvet suit.

Thick underwear can cause unsightly bulges under close-fitting clothes.

loose: clothes that are loose are big and don’t fit your body tightly.

e.g. She wore a long, loose dress.

He put on tight jeans and a loose shirt.

I’ve lost so much weight, all my clothes are loose and baggy.

loose-fitting: not fitting closely or tightly

baggy: very large and loose, and hiding the real shape of your body

e.g. Krista tried to disguise the fact that she was pregnant by wearing big baggy clothes.

Uncle Tom always wore the same clothes – baggy trousers, heavy sweater, thick jacket.

shapeless: large and loose, and having no shape or style

e.g. He looked dirty and was wearing and ugly, shapeless suit.

Daisy’s coat was dark and shapeless, with patches of different colors here and there.

Exercise 23. Make up 10 sentences with the words given above.
