Task 10: avoiding plagiarism

It is worth pointing out to students that these are not summaries but examples of acceptable and unacceptable incorporations of source material. It should also be stressed that incorporating source material in a satisfactory way is not simply a question of rewording the original. Students should be made aware of the most effective process of working - taking notes but copying only where material is felt suitable for quotation.

TASK 11: SUMMARISING AN ARTICLE

This task is intended both to practise and check the skills covered so far and is intended as an alternative or additional task to the text in Task 6 above. The inclusion of a justification for their choice of article is aimed at encouraging students to evaluate the appropriacy of their choice and to raise awareness in selecting suitable materials.

If students have access to published material, they should be encouraged to do this task even if they are not yet very familiar with their future subject of study.
