Indefinite article / a, an/

Употребляются с исчисляемыми существительными в единственном числе

Если сущ. Обозначает один предмет из класса (таких много)	She bought a pen.
Если сущ. Определяется описательным прилагательным	He was a very clever boy.
Если сущ. Обозначает профессию	He is a doctor.
Если сущ. Использовано в значении «каждый», «один»	Give me an apple. A football is made of leather.
В определенных сочетаниях выражающих измерение чего-либо	A couple, a dozen, a hundred, a million, 3 miles an hour, 4 times a week
В сочетаниях с глаголами to have, to give, to take	To have a cold, to give a lift, to take a shower
В восклицательных предложениях после слов what, such	What a chance! It’s such a good day! BUT!!! What fine weather!

Definite article the

Если сущ. Определено ситуацией, контекстом	The tee is too hot.
В значении, «то о чем только что говорили»	I’ve bought a hat. The hat is on the shelf.
Если есть уточняющее ограничивающее определение	He took the letter the postman has just brought.
Перед обстоятельством места	The book is on the desk
Перед типом географического ландшафта	The city, the country, the forest
Если сущ. Единственное в своем роде	The sun, the moon, the equator
С собирательными сущ. «все», если речь идет о классе предметов	Like the chimpanzee the gorilla live in the forests of Africa. The French cook better than the English.
В сочетании с порядковым числительным или прилагательным в превосходной степени	The first house, the best friend
Со словами all, neat, last, whole, very, only, same, former, latter, following etc.	The next summer, the following day It’s the right way to the station
