 Topic: «External respiration»

 Purpose: to master physiological methods for studying external respiration parameters, to study the mechanisms of inspiration and expiration, maintaining constant gas composition of the blood.

 Educational objectives:

o To use the theoretical knowledge into practice during the work and analysis of the results

o at performance of works to continue formation scientific research competence.

 Basic questions of the topic

1 The concept about the respiratory system, its functions.

2 The Breathing. Respiratory cycle. The main stages of respiration.

3 Functions of the lungs and airways (gas exchange and nogas exchange).

4 The importance of surfactant.

5 The pressure in the pleural cavity, its origin.

6 Mechanism of inspiration. inhalation

7 The mechanism of exhalation.

8 The lung volumes and capacities. Methods of study of external respiration (pneumography, spirography, spirometry, pneumotachometry).

9 The Quantitative indicators of ventilation (maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV,) low voluntary ventilation (LVV).

Educational methods: mastering clinical and physiological methods for studying external respiration, small group work, oral questioning, testing, solution of case studies, discussion, discussion of the results of the study.

The list of performed works.

WORK 1. Spirography at rest by spirometer Sriros-100

Objective: To familiarize yourself with the principle of the spirometer Spiro C-100. To be able to make a graphic recording of respiratory volumes at rest.
Course of the work: see Instructions in the work of spirometry C-100
Conclusion: to draw the resulting curve, make the appropriate notation.

Lung volumes and capacities Method of definition Result
VLC Vital Capacity     VLC=
RV (respiratory volume)     RV=
Capacity of inspiration CI=RV+RVI CI=
Reserve volume of inspiration РО вдоха= ЖЕЛ – (ДО + РО выдоха) RVI=VLC-(RV+RVE) RVI=
Reserve volume of exspiration   RVE=

Work 2: Determination of pulmonary ventilation and low voluntary ventilation (LVV)
Objective: To assess pulmonary ventilation (tidal volume – TV) during quiet breathing and calculate minute volume of respiration (low voluntary ventilation - LVV), which reflects the performance of the lungs.
Course of the work: Determine using spirometer tidal volume (TV) during quiet breathing.

Count the number of breaths in 1 minute during quiet breathing (respiration rate - RR).

Calculate minute volume of respiration (low voluntary ventilation) (LVV) by the formula:

LVV =RR * TV

Calculate the alveolar ventilation (AV) by the formula:

AV = RR*(TV-DS) = RR*TV- RR*DS =LVV - (RR * DS)

ИТ = ОФВ1/ЖЕЛ (FEV1/VC = Index Tiffeneau) - индекс Тиффно
ИГ = ОФВ1/ФЖЕЛ (FEV1/FVC = Index Gaenslar) - индекс Генслара

DS- Dead Space - (150ml)
