Infinitive

7. Remember!

Infinitive is used without the particle “to”:

a) after modal verbs;

b) after verbs “to make” and “to let”;

c) after constructions “would rather …”, “had better ….”, “would sooner ….”;

d) after verbs: to see, to watch, to hear, to feel, to notice.

In other cases, Infinitive is used with the particle “to”.

8. Translate the following sentences:

1. We continue to study English. 2. The children like to play basketball.

3. The boy started to run. 4. His mother intends to spend her holidays at the seaside. 5. They preferred to go there by plane. 6. She tried to open the window but she couldn’t. 7. I have just begun to translate the text.

9. Insert the particle “to”, if it is necessary:

1. He likes …. play football. 2. She can …… speak English. 3. We let them ….. go there. 4. Don’t help her ….. do it. 5. May I …. take your dictionary? 6. He made me ….. do it. 7. Mother lets us ….. swim in the river. 8. I don’t want …. see him again. 9. He would rather ….go home. 10. They wanted ….. speak to us.

11. Would you like ….. drink? 12. You had better ….take this book. 13. They couldn’t …. find the key. 14. It’s time ….. go for a walk. 15. I’d like ….. believe him. 16. We were ready …go out. 17. My parents didn’t let me ….. go to that party. 18. Do you like ….. dance? 19. Would you like ….. listen to my song?

20. His joke made me … laugh.

10. Insert the particle “to”, if it is necessary:

1. He didn’t hear me … knock the door 2. She saw him …. enter the house. 3. I watched the dark clouds ….. cover the sky. 4. I have … use a dictionary. 5. I saw a taxi … stop at the door. 6. I felt somebody …. touch my arm. 7. They want us …. call them. 8. Do you want me … help you. 9. I like … play chess. 10. I asked them … visit us. 11.
