Private and State Schools

In Britain there runs a hard line between education which is paid for directly by the parents of the children and education which is paid for by the state or the local authorities.

At least 1,5 million children between 5 and 12 in British state primary schools are in classes of 40 or over. While in private schools (schools for children of well-to-do parents) the average per class is 16.

Many state primary schools have very poor accommodation. Some school buildings date back to the nineteenth century. Very different is the situation of private primary schools which have splendid buildings.
