The Present Continuous, context examples

Вместо контекста почти всегда можно поставить наречия и обстоятельства времени, это не представляет собой сложность. Но контекст полнее раскрывает суть этой временной формы, и для его создания всегда нужно вникнуть в ситуацию.

Actions going on at the present moment – действия в настоящий момент, момент речи. Действие РАССМАТРИВАЕТСЯ в процессе, а не просто называется как таковое.

Please, don’t make so much noise. I am trying to concentrate.

Look! The ship is leaving! Is it our ship, are we so badly late?!

Hush-hush! I’m afraid someone is eavesdropping. (Тише! Боюсь, нас подслушивают).

‘To tell you the truth, I am not preparing for my exams, I am being lazy. I am very busy doing nothing and thinking the teacher will not figure it out.’ ‘

‘My dear’, he said and smiled gently ‘You are talking nonsense.’

Hurry up! We are all waiting for you!

Отдельно можно выделить случай, когда мы говорим о повторяющихся действиях (в Present Simple) и действиях, которые происходят как фон для этих действий, т.е.рассматриваются в процессе (Present Continuous)

You look lovely when you are smiling.

He doesn’t like to be disturbed when he is working.

At seven, when the watch is over, I ’m usually having breakfast.

I never talk while I am working.

 

Actions going on at the present period of time

Alex usually goes away at the weekend, but this weekend he is not doing anything special, just having some drinks and relaxing. – противовес тому, что происходит обычно

Today is a very special day: everyone is wearing costumes and playing tricks on each other. – день не такой, как обычно

He is not working, but he ’s desperately trying to find one. (now, at the present period, this summer)

The population of Moscow is growing very fast. I notice it every time I visit this city.

They shouldn’t be wearing these glasses, it’s unhealthy. Why don’t they listen to people’s pieces of advice?

3.Future arrangements, personal plans or intentions (личный план, намерение - разновидность будущего времени)

What are your plans for tonight? - I am cooking for my family, then going to sleep and wake up early in the morning.

We are taking exams in December, so sorry, I will not be able to hang out. But after the exams period I am all yours.

We are inviting a lot of guests for our anniversary in a month, so we would love to see you!

I am not driving home, you are (after the party is over)! I had some drinks.

You will let us know if you are passing through London, will you? (будешь ли проездом в Лондоне)

I am getting married! You all are invited for June, 27!

Emotional Present Continuous

She ’s always whining, have you noticed that? (вечно ноет)

The cat is forever getting shut in the bathroom. We should do something about it. (постоянно оказывается закрыт в ванной)

I am continually running into Paul these days. (все время сталкиваюсь с Полом)

Why can’t it be being solved now?! It’s urgent, can’t you understand?!

 

5. to be being + прилагательное. Используется, чтобы выразить определенное состояние, черту, качество или поведение. Это случай употребления 1. В остальных значениях не употребляется.

She is being dangerous, back off her. (Она сейчас опасна, отойди подальше)

The participants are being nervous. It’s their first competition.

Thank you, you are being helpful. I am glad I asked you to come.

 

Distancing. Официальность тона. Если используется Present Continuous вместо Present Simple, это придает меньше прямолинейности и звучит более лично.

I am enclosing the check for 200$. (менее официально, чем I enclose …).

I’m afraid I must be going now. (Более вежливо, чем I must go …).

We are hoping to arrange our meeting for Tuesday, 18. (Чуть приятнее, чем We hope to arrange …).

7.To be busy doing + герундий. Устойчивая конструкция, чтобы выразить занятость каким-либо действием. Если человек занят чем-то (существительное), говорят to be busy with + существительное.

Seamen are busy keeping their watch.

Able seamen are busy shooting troubles.

Но: Everyone is busy with the animals.

 

Present Simple versus Present Continuous

I am always meeting Mr Bailiff in the supermarket.(эмоция) vs I always meet Mr. Bailiff in the supermarket.(факт)

Dogs are barking now. (мы обратили на то внимание) vs Dogs bark now.(фон, мы не рассматриваем это как процесс)

She is constantly calling me! (раздражение) vs She always calls me. (просто всегда звонит, факт, регулярность)

The telephone isn’t working. (его временное состояние) vs The telephone doesn’t work. (никогда не работает)
