Text 4.                          AIRPLANE TICKETS

First airline tickets were introduced in Germany in 1910 and later on each airline issued tickets which were usually typed with a typewriter or sometimes they were actually handwritten. Nowadays there are several ways of booking airline tickets.

First of all you can consult a travel agent, but beware of travel agents who pass on deals to you that would be disadvantageous. Nevertheless travel agent deals with the nitty-gritty of booking flights for you. All you have to do is provide him/her with a travel itinerary, the cash and your ticket is in your hands in the nick of time.

Then you can book a ticket yourself. Make a call to your preferred airline and ask for a list of available flights, scan the list and refrain from grabbing at the first offer that comes your way. And finally make the reservation.

Booking on-line have been all the rage lately and now it is the most typical way of booking tickets. In order to make the reservation you need to surf the net and log-in to airline search engine. There you are provided with the list of available flights and you are allowed to compare fares offered by other similar companies. Once you have selected a specific flight schedule that will fit your travel itinerary, you will be asked to fill out a form online and make the purchase using your credit card. When booking on-line read carefully the notes on other fees and charges you might incur during a trip, such as fees for checking in bags, onboard snacks, and the like.

In this connection e-tickets or electronic tickets are becoming more and more popular. Online booking sites of airlines issue electronic tickets to the buyers, during this operation; the data of the client is transferred to the airline company's computer database. The data will be used at the airport when the traveler boards the plane.

One could say that electronic tickets are the substitutes of paper flight tickets, similarly as credit cards are the substitutes of cash. E-tickets have advantages for the travelers and for the airline companies as well. For the travelers, electronic tickets have the advantages that they cannot be lost or deteriorated and that they are a bit cheaper in the case of those airlines that charge an additional fee for printing/issuing paper tickets.

Though, most airlines still use the conventional paperwork and some people dislike computerized operations (especially the older generation that is not familiarized with computers and identification codes).

Another type of the so-called tickets of new generation is the open jaw tickets. The open jaw tickets are a particular type of round trip tickets that connect more than 2 cities. With these plane tickets, the traveler can fly from one city to another one and then, later return to the departure city, not from the destination city, but from a third city.

Most flyers know that round trip tickets are cheaper than one way ones. With open jaw tickets you'll have a similar advantage... And also the advantage of flexibility. By purchasing open jaw tickets, you'll pull out less money from your pocket; theoretically you should pay half price. Open jaw tickets are ideal for tourists seeking to discover a certain region of the World, without making too many stopovers. If you're travelling to more than 1 country/city, you should check at your airline/travel agency, if your destinations can be combined.

With the advent of the modern airline tickets, airports are now able to service an enormous number of people quickly and orderly. While airports can sometimes be a hassle to deal with, without airline tickets the experience would be much worse.
