1.Copper was used in prehistoric times for making weapons and tools 2. Later it was alloyed with tin to form bronze, which was the most important metal of the Greeks and Romans.3 It was replaced for these purposes by iron and steel. 4. Various grades of copper are used for engineering purposes. 5. The great development of the electric industries has resulted in such extensive uses of the metal.6. It now ranks next to iron in importance.7. The copper alloys are more widely employed. 8. The alloying of copper with other elements increases the strength of the metal in some cases and improves the anticorrosive and antifriction properties in others.

9. Copper alloys comprise two main groups — brasses and bronzes. 10.Alloys of copper and zinc are called brasses. 11.Alloys of copper with a number of elements including tin, aluminium, manganese, iron and beryllium are called bronzes.

SOME WORDS ABOUT METALLURGY

1. Metallurgy is one of the oldest of arts but one of the youngest of sciences. 2. Many of our metals were known in ancient times.3.It is only within the last century or two that the knowledge of the properties of the metals has made it possible to apply them in any extended way for industrial purposes.4. With the development of physics of metals, metallography, theory of heat treatment, and other phases of the science of metals, the field of metallurgy has broadened.

5. Metallurgy in this broader sense falls into three divisions: chemical or extractive, physical and mechanical. 6. Chemical metallurgy includes the metallurgical processes involving chemical change and the methods of production and refining.7. Physical metallurgy deals with the nature, structure, and physical properties of metals and alloys.8.Mechanical metallurgy includes the processes of working and shaping metals — processes which do not. involve chemical changes.
