What is media literacy? What are its components?

What is culture? How does culture define people?

Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. What is Culture? Culture, as a term, almost eludes absolute definition. Because it is something intrinsic to our humanity, perhaps, and humans, as a rule, also elude definition. That has not stopped some of history’s brightest minds from attempting to define it, however.

Cultural values that largely define a culture are agreed-upon ideas about what is right and wrong. These standards will vary widely amongst groups. Asked in History, Politics & Society, Definitions, Society and Civilization. Culture is inclusive of anything that helps define a people,or something that is valuable to them. A dreidel is valuable to the Jewish person much like the highland games are important to the Scottish. So yes, sports and games are elements of culture.

What is communication? What is mass communication?

Communication is the act of conveying meanings from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic rules.

Mass communication is the process of imparting and exchanging information through mass media to large segments of the population. It is usually understood for relating to various forms of media, as these technologies are used for the dissemination of information, of which journalism and advertising are part of. Mass communication differs from other forms of communication, such as interpersonal communication and organizational communication, because it focuses on particular resources transmitting information to numerous receivers. The study of mass communication is chiefly concerned with how the content of mass communication persuades or otherwise affects the behavior, the attitude, opinion, or emotion of the people receiving the information.

What are encoding and decoding? How do they differ when technology enters the communication process?

Encoding refers to the creation of, or the production of, a message (something you are trying to communicate). Decoding refers to the listener, or audience, interpreting and deriving the meaning of that message. So, in a commercial for a breakfast cereal, the company that is trying to persuade you to buy it will create an ad and you will see or hear it on TV and radio. You will then interpret, and hopeful, understand, what has just been said in that ad. British communication scholar Stuart Hall is one of the best known proponents of the theory of encoding and decoding.

What does it mean to say that communication is a reciprocal process?

This means that verbal communication is not necessarily the best means of communication. Non-verbal communication can communicate a better message with a better style. What does it mean to say that a communication is privileged?... To say that glycolysis is an anaerobic process is to say that this process does not require oxygen. Many organisms living on the bottom of the ocean use anaerobic processes. What is a reciprocal rate? A reciprocal rate is the inverse of a rate. For example, if one were to say "I can drink 5 drinks in 1 hour," then the reciprocal rate would be "In one hour, I can drink 5 drinks."

What is James Carey’s cultural definition of communication? How does it differ from other definitions of that process?

Carey’s cultural definition of communication is that communication is a symbolic process whereby reality is produced, maintained, repaired and transformed. Carey’s states that the trust purpose is to maintain ever-evolving and other definitions differ in a way that communication is to draw people together in fellowship and commonality.

What do we mean by mass media as cultural storyteller?

A culture's value and beliefs reside in the stories it tells. Who are the good guys? And who are the bad guys? What is the situation and how did it happen? Where the world would stand in the nearest future and will the humanity make it? Such stories help define our realities, shaping the ways we think, feel, and act. At the same time, you as the audience for these stories, also have opportunities and responsibilities. You use these stories not only to be entertained but to learn about the world around you, to understand the values of your society, the way things work, and how the pieces fit together. You have the responsibility to question the tellers and their stories, to interpret the stories in ways consistent with larger or more important cultural values and truths, to be thoughtful, to reflect on the stories' meanings and what they say about you, your society and your culture. To do less is to miss an opportunity to construct you own meaning and thereby culture.

What do we mean by mass communication as cultural forum?

The types of communication in mass communication are: Television, Newspaper, Radio and anything that goes out in a large quantity, such as magazines and internet. Mass communication means addressing to a mass of people. In the above mentioned examples newspaper and magazines comes under print media and television comes under visual communication. Others are cross-cultural and international. Intrapersonal communication is a type of communication wherby, the communication is within the individual. For example, Bola wakes up at exactly 6:00 a.m. and she begin to think of her daily routine - how she'll get out of bed, take her bath, eat breakfast and go to school.

What is media literacy? What are its components?

Media literacy encompasses the practices that allow people to access, critically evaluate, and create or manipulate media. Media literacy is not restricted to one medium. The US-based National Association for Media Literacy Education defines it as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication. Media literacy education is intended to promote awareness of media influence and create an active stance towards both consuming and creating media.[3] Media literacy education is part of the curriculum in the United States and some European Union countries, and an interdisciplinary global community of media literacy scholars and educators engages in knowledge sharing through scholarly and professional journals and national membership associations.

Education for media literacy often uses an inquiry-based pedagogic model that encourages people to ask questions about what they watch, hear, and read. Media literacy education provides tools to help people critically analyze messages, offers opportunities for learners to broaden their experience of media, and helps them develop creative skills in making their own media messages. Critical analyses can include identifying author, purpose and point of view, examining construction techniques and genres, examining patterns of media representation, and detecting propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and public affairs programming (and the reasons for these). Media literacy education may explore how structural features - such as media ownership, or its funding model - affect the information presented.
