Progress test 10 (part 1)

1. Explain what is meant by:

buzz industry; call-out charge; disposable income; hedge fund; legal or courtesy car cover; switching car insurance

2. Review the communication strategy of Arranging the Arguments in the Logical Order:

An entrepreneur, a former BP manager who left the oil giant 9 years ago, launched Healthcare at Home, which administers chemotherapy to people in their front rooms, being a guest of a talk show, shares his experience and encourages people to start their own business (tips: high delivery standards are key to building the thriving business; using staff nurses instead of agency workers and surrounding yourself with the right people will help you; knowing where you want the business to go is equally important; committing yourself wholeheartedly is the only way to succeed; start with looking for gaps in the market).

3. Review Evading and Being Vague communication strategy in the settings to follow:

In a telephone interview commander of the American military in the Pacific confirms the US had about a dozen medium- and heavy-lift military helicopters on standby in Thailand, ready for military operations, he evades the issue of the US interference with the local conflicts

PART 3. TALKING SCIENCE

Topic 11. Reporting / Reviewing

I. General

Tips on how to write right (set 1):

Put your main ideas first

Do not keep your readers waiting for the key idea. State it at the very beginning. Remember that each paragraph starts with the main idea which is once again mentioned in the final sentence of the paragraph.

Practicum 11.1

Suggest a closing sentence to the paragraph to follow

Know your readers

Define the target group, tailor your text to their expectations and needs; the main point to keep in mind is How much does the potential reader know?

Practicum 11.2

Define the requirements you are to meet when writing an essay on a book / linguistic paper / a letter to a potential corporate client (you are with the corporate banking), a letter to a publisher to offer your whodunit stories

Examples

 - an essay on a popular book for a glossy magazine (target group – the general reader, mostly female professionals and well-to-do ladies; provide relevant information on the author, the plot, define the genre; lure the reader by mentioning most intriguing twists of the plot; try to find what makes the book appealing to the reader )

-a linguistic paper (target group – academics affiliated with diverse linguistic schools who are not and familiar with, and are not presumably sharing, the basic concepts and ideas, and the methods employed – be explicit on the above points

Be reader-friendly

Put yourself in their shoes and look at the document through their eyes. Use headlines in different print for emphasis. Insert numbering / lettering to divide ideas. Put details and background figures in a separate enclosure. Information overload is the main reason why people do not take in messages.

Practicum 11.3

Define the layout of a letter to the editor of a scientific journal to persuade him to accept your paper for publication which features the distillation of your 2-year research. Prepare a properly laid out letter (with headlines, numbering & lettering, etc.)
