Exercise 5. Explain the reasons for the articles in these sets of contrasted examples

1. coffee

Instant coffee is produced by brewing ground roasted coffee to a strong concentrate.

Shall I make a pot of coffee?

He poured the coffee out into mugs.

Barbara sipped at the coffee and gave an approving smile.

I needed some strong coffee to wake me up.

He went up to the counter and ordered a black coffee.

A variety of gourmet coffees are on sale.

 

2. fruit

Try to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Dried fruit is raisins or prunes, or more exotic kinds of fruit dried in the sun.

Like most fruit, mangos are a good source of fibre and Vitamin C.

The fruit of this apple tree is rather sour and is only good for jam.

I’m going to have some fruit and cereal for breakfast.

Jack grows a variety of fruits and vegetables in the garden.

 

3. ice

We could feel the ice cracking beneath our feet.

The ice in my glass had begun to melt.

Her hands are as cold as ice.

Ice was forming on the surface of the lake.

The ice is too thin to skate on.

Ice is the solid form of water.

The fish were packed in blocks of ice, ready for transportation.

Drive carefully - there's ice on the road.

 

4. metal

The car is as good as new. Look at the metal, there is no corrosion at all.

The old trucks were sold as scrap metal.

Jed took hold of the cold metal of the door handle and pulled.

The gate is made of metal.

Lead is a heavy metal that has a relatively low melting point.

The metal is used in car industry.

 

5. grass

I usually mow the grass once a week.

These mowers only work efficiently on short grass.

His foot slipped on the wet grass and he fell.

A few blades of grass poked out of the dry earth.

Wheat is a grass, and it needs plenty of light to grow well.

Lawn grass prevents erosion and reduces mud and dust.

 

6. water

Water has a chemical structure of H2O.

She poured herself a glass of water.

The mineral water comes from the Scottish mountain.

Humans can't survive for more than a few days without water.

We watched the water flow under the bridge.

The injured person asked for some water.

Water has three states of aggregation: liquid water, ice and vapour.

 

7. wood.

My aunt was chopping wood in the backyard and did not hear our car approaching.

A local carpenter cut the wood into large blocks.

Wood burns easily, so many Slavic masterpieces of architecture were destroyed in fires at some point.

We need some wood and a shelter from the wind for the night.

Red Riding Hood meets a wolf in the wood, but she is not scared for some reason.

Oak is a hard wood.

 

8. rubbish

The European Union adopted several laws to encourage recycling household rubbish.

The dustmen collect the rubbish on Wednesdays.

There was rubbish and broken glass all over the grass.

I’ve got some rubbish in the attic, so I need to clear the space before mending the roof.

 

9. blood

The wounded had lost a lot of blood and was very weak.

The Health Service is asking for more people to donate blood.

A quick walk will get the blood in your legs flowing again.

Blood supplies tissues with oxygen and nutrients.

It was a minor cut, but I was anxious to clean the blood fast so that my parents should not be scared.

Companies that clean blood after accidents need to be certified and must contact the police before cleanups.

 

10. cheese

Lunch was bread and cheese.

Use a hard cheese such as Cheddar for grating.

Would you like some cheese on toast?

You can see that I am no good at cooking: the bread started to burn before the cheese was melted.

Cheese is usually yellow or white in color.

People who are allergic to milk will definitely be allergic to cheese as well.
