Exercise 5. Explain the reasons for the articles in these sets of contrasted examples

1. house

We decided to sell the house and move back to Seattle.

They live in a really big house in Hampstead.

He makes money by renovating old houses and selling them on.

 

2. basement

The basement of the house had sustained heavy damage and part of the ceiling had collapsed.

If a character in a horror movie wants to search for some small object, there is naturally only one place for that: the basement.

Houses with a basement tend to be slightly more expensive.

I hate creepy basements; they make me feel claustrophobic.

 

3. car

Daria got out of the car and locked the door.

The police cars drove off at top speed.

Brian isn’t old enough to drive a car.

A car suddenly pulled out in front of me.

Cars were parked on both sides of the road.

 

4. traveller

The traveller planned her route carefully and always kept a map in her backpack.

Exotic fruits may provide a wonderful meal for the traveller, but some contain a deadly poison.

As a seasoned traveller I know the value of being able to speak the local language.

Air travellers know how annoying it is to be late for your flight.

 

5. opinion

When choosing an insurance company it’s best to get an independent opinion.

They have a very high opinion of Paula’s art work.

The general opinion seems to be that the government has made a mess of the war.

The opinion that GMO is harmful in any way is ungrounded in any medical research.

People have strong opinions about this subject.

We asked twenty people to answer the same question. Opinions varied greatly.

 

6. plant

Don’t forget to water the plants.

He leaves his house key under the potted plant on the porch.

Many of the plants have been collected in India.

What should you do if your child has eaten a poisonous plant?

It is not an easy plant to grow.

Exotic plants can be grown in a greenhouse.

 

7. week

She thought about what a colleague had said to her the previous week.

We booked another appointment for the following week.

It would probably take a week to hike that far.

If he hasn’t phoned in a week, I’ll phone him.

My car has been stolen, I’ve lost my keys and George has been fired. What a week!

Weeks passed, I still didn’t get a letter from the admission office.

 

8. government

The US government has tightened restrictions on firearms.

Structural reforms are unlikely under the present government.

It was a major scandal that nearly brought down the government.

It was difficult for the central government to collect taxes in remote areas.

The local government has been unable to meet the demand for affordable housing.

Neither party had the majority necessary to form a government.

A new government was elected last October.

The country has had a succession of weak coalition governments.

Governments change, but peoples stay.

 

9. genre

Italian filmmakers made their own versions of the classic Hollywood genres - the western, the gangster film, the musical.

Diaries and travel notes had been functional. In the eighteenth century the first modern novelists recognized that the genre could be used to tell a story.

This movie is much better than others of the horror genre.

Science fiction as a genre is relatively new.

The spy thriller is a very commercial genre.

 

10. book

I'm reading a book about a little girl who was a slave in 19th century Atlanta.

She wrote a book of short stories, but it never got published.

This, I emphasize, is not a book about military management.

The book was an immediate success.

Everyone was waiting for the new Harry Potter book to come out.

I can read Tom like a book – he is eager to leave but does not want to be impolite.

Love of books is the most rewarding kind of love.

 

 

EXERCISE 6. Explain the use of articles with class nouns in the following song lyrics:   

1. Hey, call me back when you get this, or when you've got a minute, we really need to talk. Wait, you know what: maybe just forget it, cause by the time you get this, your number might be blocked.
