Proverbs. Health proverbs General health

Proverbs

In any language there are always many proverbs. They are short saying, usually well-known and handed down from ancient times, containing words of advice, warning or wisdom.

They are also phraseological units as they are not created in the process of speech, they are part of the vocabulary which are created by folk.

If we compare Russian and English proverbs and phraseological units we'll discover some interesting phenomena: 1) first of all, both languages have analogous proverbs. Eg.: There is no smoke without fire Strike iron while it is hot Don't look a gift horse into the mouth As the call, so the echo

2) Sometimes the meanings are analogous but the semantic centre of the phrases is different in Russian and English. It can be explained by different historical conditions at the same time. When the parallel phrases appeared. Eg.:

- Rome was not built in a day Moscow was not built in a day

Life is not a bed of roses - жизнь прожить - не поле перейти

- Do in Rome as the Romans do - с волками жить - по-волчьи выть

- As you make your bed, so you must lie on it - сам заварил кашу, сам и расхлебывай

• A healthy man is a successful man.

• Health is better than wealth.

• Wealth is nothing without health.

• Good health is the sister of beauty.

• One who hides sickness will not be cured.

• An imaginary ailment is worse than a disease. (Yiddish proverb)
