What is characteristic of life in the United States of America at this particular time of our century?

Dynamic. Depressing. Open-all-night. Everybody welcome. White only. Coloured entrance. Bloated with wealth and despairing in poverty. Aggressive and reactionary…..

The change from the old order to the new is usually not apparent except some small circumstances.

For instance, illustrated magazines now take up much of the space of news-stands previously occupied by comic books.

Another instance of the changes character of life in the United States is the very real popularity of the national pastime of watching TV. It was no long ago when a person could listen to a radio and read a book at the same time. But now there is no time to read anything even during commercials.

It is good to know that at least some things in American life are unchanging.

For instance, nothing has been able to change regional eating habits during the past half-century. Advertising is very popular in America. Advertisements fill the newspapers and cover the walls; they are on picture cards and in your daily.
