Should – ought to

Оба модальных глагола являются синонимами, имеют только одну форму для всех лиц, чисел и времён.

Should выражаeт:

1) совет, рекомендацию - следует (не следует) делать что-либо

* You should study hard if you want to pass exams. = You ought to study hard …

* He shouldn’t be late for his job interview. = He ought not to be late …

* People should drive more carefully. = People ought to drive ….

2) просьбу посоветовать что-либо - следует делать что-либо?

* Should we stay at home tonight?

* What time should we go home?

Ought to чаще употребляется, чтобы выразить:

1) моральный долг, ответственность, обязательство - (я) должен, (мне) следует

* She is ill that’s why I ought to visit her.

Should + Perfect Infinitive (have done) - выражают сожаление или упрёк по поводу

и сделанных или не сделанных действий

Ought to + Perfect Infinitive (have done) в прошлом.

* You should (ought to) have done it. - вам следовало было это сделать

(а вы не сделали)

* You should not (ought not to) have done it. - вам не следовало бы этого делать

(плохо, что вы это сделали)

Например:

* She should have consulted the doctor about these pills.

She ought to have consulted the doctor about these pills.

– Ей надо было бы проконсультироваться с доктором по поводу этих таблеток.

* You shouldn’t have bought these expensive shoes.

* You ought not to have bought these expensive shoes.

- Тебе не следовало было покупать эти дорогие туфли.

Сравните: should и must.

Must используется для настоятельных предложений, советов и мнений – должен, надо.

Should выражает те же идеи в более мягкой формесовета – следует.

Например: а) You must stop smoking or you’ll die.

You really should stop smoking, you know. It’s bad for you.

b) It’s a good film. You should go and see it.

It’s a fantastic film. You must go and see it.

Модальный глагол should часто используется с think в следующих моделях:

I think … should … - I think Carol should buy some new clothes.

I don’t think … should … - I don’t think you should work so hard.

Do you think … should …? - Do you think I should buy this hat?
