I. Rewrite and translate into Russian the following text. Get ready to comment on it.

1. Pilotage. British Ports. Every port of any consequence on the British side of the English Channel and in the Channel Islands has its own licensed pilots; relevant details are given under the port concerned in this volume. Pilot vessels at some ports are fitted with radio.

The usual signals to be made by a vessel requiring a pilot are those laid down in the International Code of Signals.

Pilot vessels are usually black-hulled and often have the letter "P" painted on the bow or the word PILOT on the side, in white; the PILOT flag (flag "H" of the International Code) is displayed.

2. Anchorage. Vessels waiting to enter the harbour may anchor in a convenient depth S of the harbour entrance on a sandy bottom, but should avoid anchoring inside the 10 m contour W of a line drawn 180° from Spit Point, 1/2 mile SW of the harbour entrance, where the bottom is rocky.

3. Tidal Streams. The Channel Islands lie mainly across the direction of the strongest streams and both direction and rate are affected by their presence.

The streams are generally rotary in an anti-clockwise direction, the E-going stream being of shorter duration and greater strength than the W-going stream; this is particularly noticeable in the S part of the area.

II. Answer the following questions:

1. What is the ship's headway used for?

2. Why is it necessary for a navigator to have information about tides and tidal streams?

3. Where are instructions for navigators published?

4. What goods are prohibited? Dutiable? Bonded?

5. In what cases is the ship put in quarantine?
