Сравнение и эпитет

Сравнение (simile – ‘simili) – троп, который сравнивает несхожие сущности. Опознавательные признаки “like”, “as”, “as though”, “as like”, “such as”, as... as”, to resemble, to remind of. She is like a rose. Beautiful like a rose - < выразительно, т.к. уже определяет признак.

Сравнение выражает интенсивность представлений, а метафора – интенсивность чувств, т.к. признак прямо не выражен.

Сравнения бывают языковые/узуальные (eats like a bird – выразительное средство) и речевые (His muscles are hard as rock. (T. Capote) – изобразительное средство).

He stood immovable like a rock in a torrent. (J. Reed)

The conversation she began behaved like green logs: they fumed but would not fire. (T. Capote).

Maidens, like moths, are ever caught by glare. (Byron)

Other words live but a short time and are like bubbles on the surface of water - they disappear leaving no trace of their existence. (I.R.G)

His mind was restless, but it worked perversely and thoughts jerked through his brain like the misfiring of a defective carburetor. (S. Maugham).

Логическое сравнение(logical comparison) – сравнение двух объектов, принадлежащих к одному классу. She is like her mother.

He talks French like a born Frenchman – л.с.

-||- like a machine-gun – с.

Эпитет (‘epithet) – лексико-синтаксический троп, выполняет функцию определения (”wild wind ”)/обстоятельства (“to smile cuttingly”) выразительного характера. В его основе лежит метафора. “loud ocean”, “formidable waves”, “ heart-burning smile ”

Одно и то же слово м.б. просто определением (sharp knife) и эпитетом (sharp mind). Э., состоящие из фразы, всегда вносят экспрессивность: ”a move-if-you-dare expression”(J. Greenwood).

Э. бывают:

- языковые/конвенциональные/постоянные (выраз.ср-во): green wood, salt tears, true love.

- речевые (изобр.ср-во): ”the smiling sun”, “the frowning cloud”, “the sleepless pillow”

- эпитеты с инверсией очень эмфатичны. Популярны в разговорном стиле: ”this devil of a woman” instead of “this devilish woman”, “the kitten of a woman” (a kittenlike woman), She was a faded white rabbit of a woman. (A.Cronin)
