Task № 1. Read the text and answer the questions in writing

The skyscraper brought about a new development in construction technology that was gradually transferred to other operations and prepared the way for effecting in the 20-th century the mechanization of the entire construction field.

Since in skyscraper construction each pier rested on its own foundation, a science was developed for laying foundations. In the past, foundations had been one continuous bed of masonry resting on solid ground. The new technology was borrowed from the bridge engineers.

The construction of the skyscraper also brought about a new organization in construction technology. A job superintendent was needed to see to the collection of materials, to organize the work of several trades, and to supervise the carrying out of specifications. Each beam and girder, and each slab for the curtain wall, was prepared at the foundry, the fabricating mill, or the quarry. Each part was marked for the exact use for which it was intended. The construction superintendent followed the blueprint for each new building. From this practice, the standardization of parts was developed, as well as the principle of mass prefabricated production and greater speed in construction. Factory production of parts in mass quantities brought about the idea of prefabricated houses.

With the advent of the skyscraper a new style in architecture appeared. It was no longer required that a building be constructed with the classic columns of the Greeks, the flying buttresses of the Gothic style, or the sturdy arch of the Romans.
