1. Who discovered Portland cement?

2. Where and when was it used on a large scale?

3. Who used reinforced concrete for the first time?

With the introduction of railways and steam machinery, transportation and manufacturing costs were considerably reduced and concrete began to be widely used, but it was still very much neglected. Good concrete was scarce and а great deal of poor concrete was used.

The breakthrough was the discovery of Portland cement by Joseph Aspdin in 1824, a worker in an English town.

When he was working an idea came to him as to how to make his work better. He started his experiments. After some time he obtained a powder. When it was mixed with water it began «to set» forming a hard substance. This substance was so much like the building stone from Portland and this powder was named Portland cement. As years passed different materials were found in many countries from which Portland cement could be made.

Portland cement was first used on a large scale in the construction of the Thames tunnel in 1828.

As early as 1830 the first idea of reinforced concrete was mentioned in the publication, which suggested that a lattice of iron rods be embedded in concrete. The development of reinforced concrete really began in the 1850’s and 60’s.

Lambort, a French contractor, built a concrete boat for the Paris International Exhibition of 1855, with 2 inch sides reinforced with a skeleton of iron rods.

W. Wilkinson, who patented a method of constructing a concrete floor in 1854, is considered to be the inventor of reinforced concrete as well.

Task №1. Read the text and answer the questions in writing.

1. When and where was the first curtain wall constructed?

2. What material were the walls in the chemical factory in England made of?

3. What materials can be used in curtain walling?

Although the curtain wall is a development of the last years it has been employed in a few buildings since the early part of the 20-th century. The origins go back to the large areas of glass cladding applied to frame structures like the Crystal Palace(1851) and the greenhouses that preceded it. But probably the first example of curtain walling is the Fagus factory in Germany constructed in 1911. In this building the construction is a steel frame supporting the floors, and the walls are just glass screens fixed to the frame. To emphasize the screen-like character of the glass walls they are continued uninterruptedly round corners without structural uprights.

An early example in England of the glass screen wall is in the Chemical factory built in 1932. Here the walls are completely of glass between floors.

From the mid-thirties to the early fifties the theme of the curtain wall was followed only in a few buildings, but in the last few years it has been developed on a large scale and it has become one of the marked characteristics of modern architecture.

Many systems have been developed and many materials are being used such as wood, steel, aluminium and bronze for the grid of frame, and a wide variety of panels between the glass, such as light weight concrete, timber, aluminium, enamelled steel, asbestos, plastics and several others. The sheet metal or plastic are often made with sandwich section to enclose an insulating material.
