Exercise 141. State the type of the adverbial modifier expressed by a gerund, a gerundial phrase or a gerundial construction. Translate the sentences.

1. The day was spent in revising the vocabulary. 2. In revising the vocabulary I learnt a lot of new words and phrases. 3. The morning was spent in cleaning the kitchen. 4. In cleaning the kitchen I threw away the things I didn’t need. 5. The afternoon was spent in cooking. 6. In cooking the salad I added too much salt. 7. The evening was spent in watching television. 8. In watching television I fell asleep. 9. Summer is usually spent in travelling. 10. In travelling abroad he has an opportunity to polish his English and German. 11. In reading up for the exam he passed the whole week. 12. In reading up for the exam he discovered that he didn’t remember many rules. 13. It’s unbelievable that a day can be spent in doing the washing. 14. In doing the washing she managed to remove the stains off her best blouse. 15. I spent two days in trying to get him on the phone. 16. In trying to get him on the phone I realized that he couldn’t give me a hand.

Exercise 142. Translate the sentences into English. Use an adverbial modifier 1) of manner 2) of time, preceded by the preposition in.

1. Утро ушло на то, что я уговаривал (to persuade) его не ездить туда. 2. Уговаривая его не ездить туда, я почувствовал, что он меня не послушает. 3. Нельзя проводить свободное время, только смотря телевизор. 4. Когда я смотрел этот сериал (a soap opera), я просто зря тратил время. 5. Читая книги для «чайников» (for dummies), можно научиться работать с компьютером. 6. Все вечера проходили в разговорах о политике. 7.
