Phonetic drill.

He had never asked her. He had hardly any money. I hadn’t had any heart trouble by the age of 50.

b) Combine the sentences in a logical order so as to make a short story. You may add a sentence or two of your own.

Listen to the sentences and raise your red card if we must use the Past perfect tense.

a) Charles turned off the radio, closed the windows, then he put on his coat and went downstairs to wait for the taxi he had ordered.

b) By the time Sam came, Bill had done his homework, and they went to the stadium together.

c) He was still in a state of uncertainty when his brother returned with a letter in his hand.

d) When Lily didn’t phone me in the evening as we had agreed I knew something had happened. I was right, she had fallen ill.

e) By the time he had finished his work he was very tired.

f) They had known each other only for two weeks when he proposed to her.

Insert either the past perfect or the past indefinite tense judging by the situation.

· I (feel) very tired when I got home, so I (go) to bed.

· When we were in the mountains we (eat) five times a day.

· I was surprised to learn that the man who was so silent and gloomy (publish) several humorous stories.

· I didn’t catch the last train. It (depart) ten minutes before.

· I missed the train, that’s why I (be) late for my classes.

· I talked to him when we (be) in the museum.

4. Complete these sentences using the verbs in brackets. You came back to your hometown after many years and you found that many things were different.

a) Most of my friends were no longer there. They … (leave).

b) My best friend, Kevin, was no longer there. He … (go away).

c) The local cinema was no longer open. It … (close down).

d) Mr. Johnson was no longer alive. He… (die).

e) I didn’t recognize Mrs. Johnson. She … (change a lot).

f) Bill no longer had his car. He… (sell) it.

g) Mrs. Fitzgerald didn’t teach at school any more. She … (get a new job).

h) Alice was no longer my girl friend. She … (marry another man).

He wasn’t hungry because he had had a snack at the University. I was surprised that they had changed their plans and didn’t go to the Crimea. By one o’clock he had fixed the electric iron and had washed the fridge. When he came to the hospital the doctor had left. By the time he began his lecture there were a hundred people in the hall. Он не был голоден, так как перекусил в университете. Я был удивлен, что они изменили свои платы и не поехали в Крым. К часу он починил утюг и вымыл холодильник. Когда мы пришли в больницу, доктор уже ушел. К тому времени, когда он начал лекцию, в зале было 100 человек.
