Goals:

1) Find similarities and differences in lives of senior citizens in Russia and the U.S.A.;

2) Compare similarities and differences;

3) Make conclusions.

Tasks:

1) Analyze similarities and differences in lives of senior citizens of two countries;

2) Highlight peculiarities.

Hypothesis:

Many people believe that life of senior citizens in the U.S.A. is better than in Russia. Is that true?

Let’s try to answer to this question. Statistics will help us to do that.

I.Life of Senior Citizens in America.

Quality and Level of Life.

American senior citizens are respected. They are given places in public transportation and in long queues.

Buses have special lifts for wheelchairs that are used by to patients, the elderly and the disabled.

A special city was built in the U.S.A. for those citizens who are older than 60-65. Sun City is located in Arizona. It was founded by businessman Del Webb in 1960.

Now it has more than 40 000 citizens.

As to pensions in the U.S., they are usually a half of the last salary.

In order to understand life of senior citizens in America, I decided to conduct a survey of our family’s friends in the U.S. They simply had to assess the quality of their lives on a 100-point scale: are they satisfied with their lives or not.

Participants Points Comments
John Reitz (Iowa)   Good ecology, low prices.
Gerry Hudson (New York)   Noise, bad water, a high level of crimes.
Valery Tarasov (Oklahoma)   Wild nature, not many cars, good pension.
Bruce Bean (Мichigan)   A very high level of crimes (people of color), drugs.

The Average Life Expectancy.

According to dry statistics, there is a big difference in the average life expectancy in Russia (blue) and the U.S.A. (red).

In order to better demonstrate differences in lives of the elderly in these two countries, I decided to interview our family’s friends in Iowa, and to compile a chart with their answers.

Name Residence Age Pension (monthly) Number of Children Way of Life
John Reitz Cathy Reitz Iowa   USD Dollars USD Dollars   On holidays, invite the guests. Like to visit cafes and restaurants. Often go to rest at sea. Often see their children, because they like to visit their parents for the weekend and on holidays.
