The South East

London & the South East have dominated the UK.

Manufacturing has been important for the South East but relatively less important than for other areas. Major service industries: insurance, banking and shipping (перевозка товаров).

The SE is one of the most densely populated parts of England.

Oxford is the largest city in the region and is home to one of Britain’s oldest universities (13th c.). Oxfordshire has major education facilities and tourist industries. Oxford City Press – the largest firm among printing & film production. The University of Oxford is linked to the concentration of local biotechnology companies.

Cowley is a suburb of Oxford where a large motor works was built last century. It is owned today by BMW and since 2001 has been producing New Rover Mini.

Dover is England’s busiest port. Ferries carry passengers and freight to and from the continent of Europe.

The terminus (вокзал, конечная станция) for the Channel Tunnel was opened in 1994 and links English mainland with the rest of Europe. It’s situated in Folkstone (a port located on the English Channel, in Kent, south-east England)

Heathrow Airport is located 15 miles west of Central London. It is the UK’s largest airport and Europe’s busiest one in terms of passenger traffic. It handles more international traffic than any other in the world.

The second busiest is Gatwick Airport (15 miles south-west of London)

Kent is known as the “Garden Of England”, famous for its apples & hops (хмель) used in brewing beer.

Kent is also known as the main area for hazelnut production in the UK.

Cement-making, papermaking were important industries in the region during the 19th & 20th century.

The South East is the second largest economic contributor among the regions of England. It has the highest levels of productivity after London.

The South East generated the 2nd largest contribution to the UK’s GVA for the information & communication sector at 22% in 2009.

London

The London region is conterminous (совпадает или смежный) with the administrative area of Greater London which has a directly elected Mayor (currently – Boris Johnson) and Assembly.

Greater London is the top-lever administrative division of England. The area was created in 1965 & concludes the City of London (the square mile) & its 32 boroughs.

The population of Greater London is 7,5 mln (2006):

-71, 15% - white British

-11 % - black British

-3,2 % are of mixed race (Chinese & “British Orientals”)

London is by far the largest contributor to the economy of the UK. Major financial & service centre. Unemployment rate is the highest in London. Hosts 12 mln tourists annually.

Inside London there’s the famous City Of London, occupying an area of about a square mile.

The City of London has a resident population of about 7,000 (2011) but around 316,700 people work there. The area is known as the Square Mile and is a major international and national business centre (former Llyn-Din).
