The East Of England (East Anglia)

Cambridge, Ipswich, Norwich and Peterborough are the major towns of the area, representing 7, 9% of the UK population.

The heritage of this area are small market towns (города, где организуются открытые рынки), playing a crucial role in economic development and service access for rural dwellers.

Norwich is the chief city of Norfolk. It has a famous outdoor market, where people from the local rural areas come to sell their products.

In the west of Norfolk, Newmarket attracts horse dealers to its annual auction.

Combined with unique coastal, wetland and woodland habitats, those market towns contribute to the distinctive character that makes the East of England special for both residents & visitors.

More than 71% of the total land area of the region is used for agriculture - the highest proportion of any region in England apart from the East Midlands.

Almost 87% of the agricultural land in the East of England is used for arable crops: cereals, sugar beet, fruit and vegetables are produced here.

The region has the 2nd highest concentration of pigs of all the English regions, & the lowest concentration of cattle and sheep.

Norfolk is well-known for its turkeys and now boasts the largest turkey farm in Europe.

Fishing is the region’s most important industry. Cod, herring, flatfish (камбала) and shellfish (молюски) are landed in regional fishing ports. Cromer is famous for its crabs.

The region was responsible for 16% of the UK’s agriculture and fishing GVA in 2009.

East of England is famous for biotechnology & information and communication technology (ICT) cluster (концентрация) that is the largest in the world outside the US. These companies are based in and around Cambridge.

Other high technology industries such as electronics & aerospace have been important for the region.

Luton is one of the major towns of the area. It’s located in the county of Bedfordshire, 50 km north of London. Associated with its busiest airport. It was also home to a large Vauxhall Motors Factory. The town has got the largest share of non-white population in the East of England (32%).

In 2009 13% of the region’s GVA was derived from: wholesale and retail trade & repair of motor vehicles.

In general, the Thames valley between London and Bristol is an area of high technology and electronic industries concentration, known as the “Sunrise Strip”.

The EoE has the highest employment rate of any English region.
