Guidelines for Revising Precis

Problem Technique Revision
Content The wrong details are uncluded. Cut/Add Cut unimportant details that are not main ideas.
Audience The summary doesn’t seem right for the audience (some terms are too complex). Replace/ Add Replace words and sentences to make them more suitable for the audience. Add definitions and explanations of unfamiliar terms.
Organization The order of ideas isn’t the same as in the original. Reorder Reorder sentences or ideas until the organization follows the original.
The ideas do not flow smoothly.. Add/ Replace Add direct references and transitional expressions; substitute more appropriate expressions.
Style Some words are vague or overused. Replace Replace these words with more exact words.
The text is not syntactically dense. The sentences are monotonous. Replace/ Reorder Combine choppy sentences. Split rambling sentences. Change the word order so that sentences begin in different ways.
.Some wording seems very informal. The tone is not suitable for the purpose. Cut/ Replace Remove light informal expressions, slang, contractions, and replace them with standard forma! words to create a more serious tone.
Length The summary is too long. Cut/ Replace Cut unimportant details in the precis.

Proofreading.

Proofread the draft of your precis carefully for errors in spellinggrammar, usage, and punctuation.

Making the final copy.

Make a clean correct final copy of the revised and proofread draft J your target language precis.

It is challenging to write a summary that is complete and yet concise. Always check your precis against the original for accuracy, and beprepared to revise it.
