Правильные варианты: No, nothing like that / No, I meant something quite different. А еще лучше: Nothing of the sort.

– Извините, я опоздал.

– Ничего, не страшно.

Правильные варианты: Never mind / It doesn’t matter / Don’t worry / Don’t give it another thought (разг.) / Forget about it!

На столе было много превосходных вин, а мне ничего нельзя!

(Осторожно: в русском два отрицания!)

Неправильно: On the table there were many great wines, and I cannot have none!

Правильные варианты: There were many excellent / superb wines, but I can’t have a drop.

Будьте также внимательны в процессе поиска эквивалентных замен для таких слов, как: «нечего, никто / некто, никуда / некуда, никогда / некогда и негде»:

Делать нечего, придется ехать сейчас, а то опоздаем.

Неправильно: Nothing is to be done, we’ll have to go…

Правильный вариант: Nothing doing, we’ve got to go (right now), or we’ll be late.

От нечего делать он стал читать детективный роман.

Неправильно: Out of doing nothing, he started to read the detective novel.

Правильные варианты: Out of boredom / Since he had nothing else to do / he started reading the detective novel.

(Не)чего греха таить. Это я виноват – часы остановились.

Неправильно: There is / It is nо sin to hide, my clock stopped.

Правильные варианты: To tell the truth / to be frank / I must admit that my watch stopped.

Возразить нечего, я согласен. Работа отличная.

Неправильно: I have nothing to say, it is excellent work.

Правильные варианты: I’m in full agreement / I agree completely / I have no objections / I have nothing to add / It’s quite clear that / it’s an excellent piece of work / an excellent job.

Никто здесь про него ничего не знает.

Неправильно: No one here knows nothing of him.

Правильный вариант: No one here knows anything about him.

Я заблудилась в лесу. Не у кого было спросить, где дорога / тропинка!

Правильные варианты: I got lost in the woods, and there was no one I could ask / to ask how to get back to the road / path!

Мой старый велосипед никуда не годится – у него сломано колесо.

Правильные варианты: My old bicycle is no good / good for nothing / damaged – it has a broken wheel.
