The First International conference on modulation spectroscopy

Aim and scope of the Conference. The aim of the Conference is to review the current status of experimental and theoretical aspects of modulation spectroscopy. With optical modulation techniques spreading into an ever wider diversity of fields, the program will emphasize the basic concepts of mechanisms common to the variety of studies.

The Conference will provide opportunities for the exchange of information among scientists involved with the various aspects of modulation spectroscopy, for assessing existing results, and for outlining future developments and trends. Ample time for discussion and panel sessions will be provided. Topics of current interest will be reviewed by invited speakers. All contributions and the discussions following them will appear in the Proceedings of the Conference, to be published as a special issue of "Surface Science". Contributions are invited from areas in which modulation spectroscopy has recently been used. With no claim for completeness, the list includes the following:

Time and location. The Conference will be held November 23-26, 2001, at the Westward Look Inn, a resort hotel in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains overlooking the city of Tucson and the campus of the University of Arizona. Accommodations and Conference rooms are part of the same comfortable setting, encouraging informal exchange and discussions among the participants. At double occupancy, the room rate is 9 dollars per person per day. Single rooms are available for 15 dollars per day.

Advance registration. The aim and character of the Conference require attendance to be registered to 150 participants. Attached to this notice is a postcard, which must be filled in and returned before June 20, 2001, in order for a prospective attendee to be considered. Attendees will be notified of acceptance of their advanced registration by July 15.Together with the confirmation of advanced registration, each accepted attendee will receive a form for making reservations at the Westward Look Inn.

Registration fee. A registration fee of 25 dollars, to be collected at the time of the Conference, will entitle the registrant to a free copy of the Proceedings.

Travel stipends. The Conference budget includes contributions to the travel expenses of a small number of graduate students and young faculty members actively working in modulation spectroscopy. Anyone who wishes to be considered for such aid is asked to apply to the Conference Chairman.

Manuscripts. Manuscripts will be published in the Proceedings if submitted before November 1, 2001. Discussion remarks and final corrections can be added at the time of the Conference. Manuscripts should be prepared according to the standards of "Surface Science». Each contributor will receive 25 free reprints of his paper. Additional reprints can be ordered at standard prices.

Deadlines. Submit the attached postcard by June 20. Submit abstracts of papers by June 20. Submit manuscripts by November 1.Registration postcards, abstracts and manuscripts are to be mailed to the Conference Chairman. Inquiries may be directed to the Chairman or to the Conference Secretary.
