EXERCISE 9. Write Participle I (the –ing form) of the verbs paying special attention to the spelling rules.

The mute e is dropped before -ing take - taking dance - dancing
The final у is not changed before -ing try - trying say - saying
The letters ie are replaced by у before -ing die - dying lie - lying
The final consonant is doubled if it is preceded by a short stressed vowel get - getting put - putting
The final 1 is always doubled before -ing in Br.E.; it is not doubled in Am.E. if it is preceded by a short unstressed vowel level - levelling (B.E); leveling (A.E.)

EXERCISE 10. Write the verbs in parentheses in the Present Progressive.

EXERCISE 11. Use the Past Simple instead of the infinitives in parentheses. Observe the following spelling rules:

for verbs ending in
a short stressed vowel + a consonant a short vowel(stressed or unstressed) + 1 a stressed vowel + r a consonant + У
double the consonant and add -ed double the final 1 and add -ed in Br.E.; 1 is not doubled in Am.E if it is preceded by a short unstressed vowel double the final rand add -ed change у into i and add -ed
