Military Service at the Academy

I have a special friend. He is a sergeant. Five months ago he left his secondary school and decided to enter the Civil Defence Academy. In summer he passed his entrance examinations successfully and became a cadet of the Academy. In September my friend swore allegiance and his military service began.

It’s rather difficult for him to combine studies and service because he has to learn different subjects and carry out his military duties.

The Civil Defence Academy trains specialists for the Emergency Situations Ministry. The programme for cadets includes both general and special subjects. The main special subjects are engineer protection of population and territory, search and rescue operations, emergency management, rescue equipment, etc. Manuals and regulations, marching drills, as well as range practice are of great importance too. Much attention is also paid to physical training and foreign languages.

The necessary professional practical habits are acquired by cadets at the Academy’s training center, which is equipped with modern facilities. Besides, the cadets of the Academy have their practice in different units and subunits of the Civil Defence Forces. They learn to command units, organize and control emergency operations and perform different rescue missions.

The academic programme covers a period of 4 or 5 years. As for my friend, he’ll study and serve at the Academy for 4 years. Upon successful graduation from the Academy he’ll be promoted to the rank of lieutenant and sent for his further military service.
