My daily routine
On weekdays the alarm clock wakes me up at 6.30 and my working day begins. I'm not an early riser that's why it's very difficult for me to get out of bed, especially in winter. I switch on my tape-recorder and do my morning exercises. Then I go to the bathroom, take a warm shower and clean my teeth. After that I return to my bedroom to get dressed.
Usually my mother makes breakfast for me. But when she is away on business or just doesn't have to get up early, I make breakfast myself. While having breakfast, I listen to the latest news on the radio.
I leave the house at 7.30 and go to the nearest underground station. Last year I tried to enter the University, but unfortunately I failed my entrance examinations. So I thought I should work somewhere. It wasn't easy to find a job, but I managed to get a position of a secretary in a small business company. They agreed to take me because I had studied typewriting, computing and business organization at school. And besides, I passed my English school-leaving exam with an excellent mark.
It takes me an hour and a half to get to work. But I don't want to waste my time on the train. I've got a small cassette player and I listen to different texts and dialogues. Sometimes I read a book and retell it silently. If I come across an interesting expression I try to memorize it. I also write some English words on flashcards and learn them.
I usually arrive at work at ten minutes to nine though my working day begins at 9 sharp. There are always some fax messages to translate from English into Russian. Sometimes my boss wants me to write a letter to our business partners abroad. There are also a lot of phone calls, which I have to answer.
At 1 o'clock in the afternoon we have lunch. We usually have lunch in a small cafe just round the corner. At 2 o'clock we come back to work. And we work hard till 5 o'clock.

During the working day we also have several short coffee breaks. But sometimes we have no time for them.
I come home at about 7 o'clock in the evening. My parents are usually at home, waiting for me. We have dinner together. Then we sit in the living room, drink tea, watch TV or just talk.
Occasionally I have to stay at work till 6 or even 7 o'clock in the evening. When we have a lot of things to do we go to work on Saturdays. So by the end of the week I get very tired. All I can do on Sundays is to sleep till eleven o'clock, watch television, listen to music and read something in English.
And still I always look forward to my next working day because I like my job. I think I get a lot of useful experience.

Our University
(A Letter)
Dear Helen,
Don’t be angry with me for my long silence, but I really was too busy to write.
As you know, I left school in June and began to prepare for my entrance exams to the University. As both my mother and father are teachers I have made up my mind to be a teacher too. I think teaching is a noble profession.
I had to take four exams and passed all of them with excellent marks. So I’m glad to tell you that now I’m a first-year student at the Kyiv State Teacher Training University.
I should like to show you the main building of our University. I can't help admiring this fine old building with its beautiful columns. It goes without saying we, students, are very proud of our University.
There are 18 faculties at our University which train teachers in many subjects: Russian, Literature, Mathematics, Physics, Geography, Chemistry, Biology, Foreign languages and others. Many well-know professors teach at our University.
We have good libraries and reading-rooms and fore those who go in for sports there are good gymnasiums and stadium.
At present we have quite a lot of work as we have English practice, Grammar and Phonetics, Linguistics, History of our native land and other subjects. There is an English speaking club at our faculty. It gives as a good opportunity to master the language, but I don’t take part in it yet. I am working hard at my pronunciation. There is a good language laboratory at our faculty where we work with cassette-recorders. It helps us to find out our mistakes and to get rid of them in the shortest possible time.

AT THE LIBRARY
Libraries are very important in the life of people. We need a lot of useful information, but we can't buy all the books we want to read. For this reason we usually borrow our books from libraries.
As a rule a lot of people go to the libraries on days off, because they have some free time for some necessary and enjoyable things they didn't manage to do on weekdays. They bring their books to the library and go home taking new ones.
The librarians take books from the people who come and give them some new books to choose for reading at home. In each book there is a little pocket and in this pocket there is a piece of paper. The librarian takes this piece of paper out of the pocket. She fills it in and gives you the book you have chosen.
I am a subscriber to our university library. I got used to bring home some of my books from my university library, and about every fortnight I go there to exchange the books. Our library is situated on the second floor of the university. It is rather large and light, and besides, there is a reading-room where you can work at some rare books or magazines. The librarian is always ready to help the students and teachers in choice of books. A great number of volumes fill the shelves of the library. You can find there any books to your taste: fiction, travel books, biographies, historical novels, adventure stories, fairy tales, psychological novels, collections of short stories, the immortal classics.
Our university library subscribes to some newspapers and magazines, which keep us well informed about the latest developments in our country and abroad, news in the spheres of science, art, literature and sport.
On the wall opposite the librarian desk you can see a stall full of the latest books, which have appeared recently. You can look through these books, notice the information you need, have a general impression of the book or magazine.
As I am interested in English, I often borrow the books by American and English writers and read them with great pleasure.
